Findings Series 23 - Health and Social Inequalities

Date: January 2010
Category: Briefing Paper Findings Series
Work programme: Health related services - tackling inequalities
Author: GCPH

This briefing paper summarises a project to develop a local monitoring framework for reviewing Community Health (and Care) Partnerships’ (CH(C)Ps’) progress on action to address health and social inequalities.

This project had two phases of activity with the following aims:

  • Phase 1 – to explore and define an inequalities-sensitive planning process for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) CH(C)Ps that incorporates a population perspective.
  • Phase 2 – to create a framework for identifying indicators for CH(C)Ps to monitor and review progress on actions to address inequalities.

This paper sets out both phases of work, including recommendations from Phase 1 and presentation and explanation of the framework.  The analysis proposed that CH(C)Ps’ plans for reducing inequalities could be strengthened in a number of ways including using equity based principles as the basis for planning; including statements of their aims and objectives for reducing inequalities; and linking actions more clearly to knowledge about the population together with research evidence for inequalities theory and practice.
