The Joint Officers Group on Health Improvement
The membership of the group is drawn from senior level with cross-Council representation, and additional health expertise from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the GCPH (Fiona Crawford and Carol Tannahill). It is directly accountable to the corporate management team led by Glasgow City Council's Chief Executive.
The role of this group, established in early 2007 and chaired by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Director of Public Health, is to maximise the health improvement aspects of its services and powers and to tackle health inequalities.
The agreed remit is to:
- Raise awareness of the Council’s role in improving health and tackling inequalities
- Influence the Council’s thinking on health issues through sharing evidence and good practice
- Ensure that all Council strategies, policies, plans and services take account of their impact on health and health inequalities
- Secure agreement for action to maximise the positive impact of the Council’s activities in respect of health
- Take a lead role in determining the Council’s priorities for health improvement and addressing health inequalities, as part of the Council Plan
- Develop a Council health action plan which clearly defines the Council’s contribution to health improvement and tackling health inequalities
- Support the joint contribution which the Council can make to health through links to key partners, including Community Planning
- Develop structures for Council services to share good practice and to assess their impact and performance on health.
Priorities for 2010 include overseeing progress on the Glasgow Health Commission’s recommendations and on the recommendations of the Director of Public Health’s most recent report.
