Resilience and Social Networks as a Resource for Health

Better understanding about how people and communities cope with crisis, stressors and hardship has come to the forefront of public health thinking in recent years. This approach recognises both the resourcefulness of individuals and the wider networks and communities to which they belong.

Aims

  • To improve understanding of the role that social networks (families, friends and key others) play in the maintenance of health and wellbeing.
  • To understand what promotes resilience and the development of social capital for both individuals and communities.
  • To ascertain how policies and strategies can promote health enhancing communities.
