This annual event was centred around the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which takes place on 17th October.

The main aims of the week were to:

  • Highlight the reality of poverty and challenge the stereotypes that exist about it
  • Demonstrate what is being done across Scotland to address poverty
  • Increase public support for more action to combat poverty.

During Challenge Poverty Week this year we tweeted a series of infographics highlighting different aspects of poverty – follow us on Twitter

The Voices of Poverty infographicfirst infographic looks at lone parents' experiences with poverty, in their own words.

Food banks full infographicThe second infographic focuses on food banks and food poverty in Scotland and Glasgow.

Child Poverty infographicThe third infographic looks at child poverty - 1 in 3 children in Glasgow live in poverty.

Poverty and health inequalities are inextricably linked and much of our research touches on the many issues relating to poverty and deprivation. Our work under the ‘Poverty, disadvantage and the economy’ theme can be accessed here.

Exploring variations across Glasgow

Our recent film, Exploring Understanding Glasgow, is an interesting and accessible introduction to the resources on our Understanding Glasgow website and looks at how health varies across the city. The film looks at lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity, but also focuses on how poverty impacts on different parts of the city and how data can be used to illustrate how poverty affects people living in Glasgow.

Watch the film on our Understanding Glasgow site.

We also have a series of films which are set in and around Glasgow, and reflect the lived experiences of Glaswegians and let people tell their own stories. The films cover a wide range of issues which affect people living in and around Glasgow – employment, regeneration, community spirit and parenthood to name a few.
