Dr Mairi Young

Public Health Research Specialist

Please note Mairi works Tuesday-Thursday.

Mairi’s background is in Health Psychology, and Dental Public Health where she contributed to the Childsmile evaluation for her PhD. Before joining the centre, Mairi worked at Glasgow Caledonian University researching public awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance via mass media interventions.

During the Covid pandemic, Mairi co-authored the Health in a Changing City: Glasgow 2021 report which provided a comprehensive analysis of population, socioeconomic, environment, and health factors over 20 years. She specifically contributed research on gender-based violence and women’s safety, highlighting high numbers of sexual offenses against women in Glasgow and continued low rates of reporting. This was followed up by a series of blogs, launched on International Woman’s Day 2022, focusing on the various areas in which women and non-binary people are marginalised, what is driving these social and systemic failures, and what could drive change.

Mairi was recently appointed as an external supervisor to a Master of Public Health Student at University of Glasgow who will be conducting research to examine what factors drive under-reporting of sexual harassment in Scotland. This proposal was a derived from findings from the Health in a Changing City report.
