Calton: Unlocking the potential

Mar 2013

Living Streets was commissioned by the Glasgow City Equally Well test site to undertake a Community Street Audit with local people in Calton – a neighbourhood in the east end of Glasgow. The purpose of which was for local people - rather than city Planners - to walk through and evaluate the quality of the streets and spaces in their neighbourhood.

This report explains the process of undertaking the Street Audit. It also identifies the key issues for the Calton area and offers recommendations for future development based around five key themes; identity, connectivity, legibility, safety and liveability. The process was considered to be useful in terms of attracting funding and justifying spend in the area, and many of the recommendations have subsequently been taken forward to help establish more strategic priorities within a Local Development Framework.
