Glasgow City Council consult on 20mph zones

19 November 2015

Glasgow City Council are consulting on the introduction of 20mph zones in the city centre.

Glasgow City Council have recently announced plans to introduce a 20mph maximum speed zone covering the city centre area. This change could help to deliver a number of policy objectives and targets set out by the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council.

We support the introduction of this traffic order on the basis that it has the potential to improve safety, contribute to reducing accidents, increase the number of people walking and cycling in the city centre and improve air quality.

Additionally, we recommend that a 20mph limit is extended across the city or at least to areas where pedestrian and cyclist casualties are highest and where young people are most vulnerable to traffic. This would have the potential to reduce inequalities in health outcomes caused by accidents.

The consultation is ongoing and closes on Monday 30th November 2015.
